J.R. Mitchell originally hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, J.R. cites early influences in Surrealism such as Salvador Dali and H.R. Giger, as well as the books of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. His tattooing influences early on were Paul Booth, Bob Tyrrell , and Deano Cook, to name a few.
